Indian athletics lacks an inspiration like Sachin Tendulkar: Olympic Champion David Rudisha

Posted on 18:08 by ranjeet

Olympic champion and world record holder, David Rudisha says the success-starved Indian athletics fraternity lacks an inspirational figure, like cricket has in the form of someone like Sachin Tendulkar.

"India have the potential to produce athletes like Kenya and Jamaica but the problem is lack of inspiration and motivation. Like in cricket you have Sachin Tendulkar, young generation looks up to him," Rudisha told PTI in an interview.

Besides infrastructure and proper training, the Kenyan said "you need someone whom the Indian athletes can look up to".

"It is not talent or ability that Indian athletes lack. You need strong sporting culture to produce world-class athletes. Why cricket is so famous in this region because you have inspirational figures.

"Likewise in Kenya, youth look up to athletes like us. We have produced so many legends in athletics that we always wanted to be like them."

The London Games 800m world record holder said India athletes needed to change their attitude.

"It's unfortunate that India have not been able to produce great athletes. They need to change the attitude, see what is the problem, why they are lagging behind. It's all about training and changing their attitude towards the game because running comes from inside. It's natural.

"I believe in producing world-class athletes and, apart from good training, good coaching and infrastructure, you need a strong feeling from inside," he said.

Rudisha is in the capital as the Event Ambassador of the Delhi Half Marathon 2012.

Rudisha holds six of the eight fastest and half of the twenty fastest times ever recorded in the 800-metres event.

In one of the most celebrated individual track performances of the London Games, Rudisha broke his own previous world record of 1:41.01 when he reached the 800m finish line in 1:40.91s, thus cementing his legendary status in the athletic world.

Rudisha reckoned that it would be "very difficult" to replicate his London feat.

"It is going to be a very difficult task, I guarantee. For that to happen again, it has to include everybody in the race, five people ran under 1:43 and all of us ran under 1:44.

I don't think something like that is going to happen soon. Nothing has ever happened before like that," he said.

"It was a great race and everybody contributed to that. It was the great performance by me. That was the best moment of my life, going to Olympics for the first time and winning the medal.

"Before embarking on the journey, only one thing was on my mind that I have to win the race. I broke the  world record too, that was great," said Rudisha, who was born in Kilgoris, Trans Mara District.

At 23, Rudisha has reached the peak by scaling almost everything -- current Olympic and world record holder in 800 metres as well as current World and Olympic Champion in distance running.

And 'King David', as he is famously known back home, has no intention to slow down.

sachin_story_300"It's not the end. There are still greater things to achieve in the future. In 2010, I broke two world records within a span of eight days. After that, I wanted to become a world champion and then the Olympic champion. Now that I have achieved everything, I am looking forward to the Rio Olympics.

"Many great athletes have two Olympics behind them, they have made world records and broke them. I still have the urge to succeed. I want to become double Olympic champion. I think that is the next thing I should go for, be motivated and win more races in future," he said.

For Rudisha, his father Daniel, who was part of the 1968 Olympics silver winning Kenyan 4X400m relay quartet, still remains a "big inspiration".

"We crack a lot of jokes together. When I was young, I always wanted to be like him. He used to tell me, if you want to become an athlete you need to go ahead of me, you have to first break my records. Now that I have won an Olympic medal and holds the current world record, he should be proud of me."

Talking about the season gone by, Rudisha expressed happiness over his performance.

"I gave my best. Every race was important to me. The wonderful moment of this season was my London Olympics win. Just before the race, I had told my manager James during the warm-ups that if I finish first 400m in 49 secs, I can push in the last 400 to finish the race in 1:41mins. But I did not know whether I can set the world record."

Rudisha belongs to a country that has produced many great athletes, but he still received a huge welcome at Nairobi airport after winning the 2011 IAAF World Championships. A possession of 50 cattle escorted the then new star.

The Kenyan was overwhelmed with this love and respect from his countrymen.

"I'm from the Masai community, which has not produced enough international level athletes. Most of the athletes come from high altitude. So the welcome was very special for me.

"In our community, 22-year-old men are considered as warriors. So they say that I kill a lion by breaking the world record," he said.

Rudisha opted to come to the Delhi Half Marathon because he sincerely believed that his visit here could inspire youngsters to strive hard for glory.

"A mass-participation high profile events like this helps generate interest in sport and one just cannot say when a real talent will be found," he said.

Tendulkar will always remain an inspiration : Afghanistan captain Nawroz Mangal

Posted on 01:17 by ranjeet

Afghanistan’s captain, Nawroz Mangal, spoke to The Telegraph at the Taj Samudra (in a mix of languages) on Tuesday afternoon. The 28-year-old was excited about the World Twenty20, which began later in the day.

Mangal, incidentally, had been Afghanistan’s captain in the last edition (2010), too.

The following are excerpts

Background...

We’re from Khost... After the Soviet invasion (in 1979), we’d fled to Peshawar as refugees... We returned to Afghanistan in 2005... Apne watan to wapas jana hi tha.

If he’s a full-time cricketer...

Yes.

His inspiration...

Sachin Tendulkar... When I was younger, I couldn’t pronounce his family name... Tendulkar bolna mushkil hota tha... Now, of course, it’s not an issue. He’ll always remain an inspiration.

Being crazy about Sachin...

Absolutely... There was a time I’d write Sachin’s name on my right palm before going out to bat! I’ve been that crazy... When we were in Peshawar, those around me would urge me to support Pakistan, for I’d get very upset if Sachin got out in an Indo-Pak match.

If he’s met Sachin...

It’s a regret that I haven’t met him... Hopefully, that day isn’t far off.

Some suggesting that Sachin should only focus on Test cricket now...

Look, this decision must be left to Sachin alone. Others can’t decide for him.

100On Team India’s fan following in Afghanistan...

Massive... In Afghanistan, more people support India than they support Pakistan.

Having to captain against India on Wednesday...

As a professional, it will be my job to do my best... It’s my duty.

Captaining a team which isn’t expected to beat the big guns...

It’s a challenge, but it’s a challenge that I’ve accepted. We’ve qualified for the World Twenty20.

If he finds himself under pressure...

No. People (teammates, fans) trust me, believe that I’ll only do what’s good for Afghanistan.

Role model captain...

Two... Steve Waugh and Daniel Vettori. Both led so calmly and led with a big heart. Dil se kaptani kari.

If he’s fond of Hindi movies...

I’m a big fan of Aamir Khan. Among actresses, Kareena Kapoor is my favourite... She’s classy.

Listening to songs coming out of Bollywood...

I enjoy anything from Mohammed Aziz, Sonu Nigam and Pankaj Udhas... Mazaa aata hai.

The last one... A dream of his...

(Emotionally) To qualify for the 50-over World Cup in 2015... This is our second World Twenty20, now we’d like to graduate to the 50-over game... It’s a collective dream.

Sachin is God's gift to cricket; please let him decide when to retire : Brian Lara

Posted on 03:59 by ranjeet

Amidst many calling for out-of-form Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, West Indies great Brian Lara has come out in support of the India batsman.

At the ICC awards here on Saturday night, Lara, who many stellar cricket pundits believe was as good a batsman as Tendulkar, told IBN7, “I am not sure if I am all correct. But I have noticed that he [Sachin Tendulkar] is not playing the shorter formats to prolong his Test career

"I believe Sachin would know when is the right time to leave. He is an asset to the world cricket, not only to Indian cricket.

“Any decision has to be made by the man himself. I know he will make the right decision. I have great respect for him on and off the field.

“You don’t just push a guy like that. He is a great player and you just have to enjoy for whatever period he plays."

laraAt the awards, the dashing left-hander, who represented the Caribbean nation in 131 Tests and 299 over 17 years, was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He became the 67th player to join the list of illustrious players.

"I think it's a very humbling experience for me. To be named alongside some of the great cricketers not just from the West Indies but from all around the world like Sir Garfield Sobers, the three Ws, Sir Vivian Richards is a very special feeling," Lara said.

"First of all, to be considered and then to be selected is a great moment."

Sachin Tendulkar is the ‘Kohinoor of World Cricket' : Abdul Qadir

Posted on 05:44 by ranjeet

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Abdul Qadir is of the opinion that it should be left to Sachin Tendulkar to decide when he wants to retire from international cricket.

While Qadir's former skipper Imran Khan has said that Tendulkar should not leave it upto the selectors, the leg-break bowler feels that it is only Indian legend who has the right to decide about his future.

"I respect what Imran had said but Sachin is an exception as he is in a different league. He is like the 'Kohinoor of World Cricket'. He should have the right to decide about his future," the leggie told PTI Bhasha from Pakistan.

Qadir believes that someone like Tendulkar who wears his heart on his sleeve will not delay his retirement once he knows when is the right time.

250px-Sachin_Tendulkar"Sachin has contributed a lot to the game. A talent like him comes once in a generation. He is patriotic and the day he realizes that he can't contribute to Indian cricket, he will retire.

"His love for cricket and commitment towards country is unquestionable," said the man, who was hit by a 16-year-old Tendulkar for four sixes during an exhibition one-day match during the tour of 1989.

Qadir took a dig at the critics who are calling for Tendulkar's retirement to look at his record for the past 23 years.

"People who criticise Sachin should not forget that he has been playing for more than 23 years and had innumerable brilliant performances and achievements second to none. I have played international Cricket for 18 years and I can understand the pressure to perform. People should not form an opinion on the basis of couple of failures. No one can make century in every inning," he concluded.

Sachin Tendulkar Calls Up London Paralympics Silver Medalist Girisha

Posted on 09:01 by ranjeet

Basking in the glory of being India's lone medallist at the recently-concluded Paralympics, London Games silver-winner Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda's joy multiplied when he received a phone call from star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

"Sachin called me up last evening and I was very happy when he said I have become an inspiration for many people," Girisha told PTI at Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar's official residence here.

High-jumper Girisha, who has an impairment in his left leg, sailed over 1.74m in the final of the Games to finish second behind Iliesa Delana of Fiji.

Asked about the conversation, Girisha said the batting maestro told him to perform even better in future and win as many medals as possible.

The Paralympian said he would meet Tendulkar in a few days time.

ndtvAsked whether Tendulkar has promised to offer him a gift as he did to London Olympics bronze-medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal, Girisha said he did not expect anything from the batsman.

"Just that he (Sachin) spoke to me over phone has given me so much of joy because I have been following Sachin and his game closely," he added.

Girisha said apart from Tendulkar , he received a congratulatory call from Saina.

He said wrestler Sushil Kumar is his role model because he has been a consistent performer for India winning bronze and silver medals in Beijing and London Olympics respectively.

"I also like his soft nature."

Earlier, Girisha was accorded a warm welcome at the Bangalore International Airport today on his arrival from the Games.

Sachin is the most experienced cricketer on the planet : Kris Srikkanth

Posted on 05:16 by ranjeet

Outgoing chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanth on Tuesday said India’s star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar knows the best when to retire, adding that the team needs his presence.

“Sachin knows when to retire. He is someone who is special. Someone who scores 100 centuries at the highest level... doubting his abilities is wrong judgment.

“The team needs Tendulkar to guide the youngsters in the next couple of Test series at home. He is the most experienced cricketer on the planet. He knows what he is doing,” Srikkanth said.

Srikkanth, whose tenure as Indian chief selector is about to end, says the World Cup win last year was his biggest achievement.

“In 2008 when I took over, I didn't have enough experience as selector. In end-2009 when Sri Lanka were touring India, this committee started planning for the World Cup. I was a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and that helped.

“I consider myself fortunate to be a part of the planning process. The presence of Yashpal Sharma, who was also a winning member of the 1983 team, also helped. The likes of Hirawani, Bhave and Raja Venkat were excellent co-selectors. Jimmy Amarnath's presence in the committee was extremely helpful. If India win the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, it will be a perfect sign off,” he was quoted as sayibg by the Times of India.

However, the former cricketer says India’s loss against Australia and England were the lowest points.

“We had a great opportunity to win a Test series in Australia earlier this year. Unfortunately, we lost all the matches. I strongly believe that the first one or two matches of a series are very crucial. It can go either way if a team fails to grab opportunities.

“In both England and Australia, we had opportunities to come back into the series but let the opposition off the hook,” he said.

Srikkanth believes Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the best man to lead India and the team thrives under him.

kris“Dhoni is a good captain. Under him, we do have losses, but overall he has done well. The team responds well to his captaincy and he gets the players to rally around him,” he said.

Srikkanth said the selection panel under him has nothing to do with the retirements of as many as four India senior cricketers during their tenure.

“It's true that four senior cricketers retired during my tenure, but it's their decision. We can't force anyone to retire. I haven't forced anyone to retire. You have to respect their decisions. The process of rebuilding is never-ending and a particular group of selectors have nothing to do with these decisions,” he said.

Srikkanth said Virat Kohli’s has improved many folds and whether he is pushed forward to lead India in future, is something that  the next selection panel will decide.

Talking about Yuvraj Singh, Srikkanth said, “Yuvraj was the star of the 2011 World Cup. His fitness certificates were produced in the selection meeting and so there was no question of ignoring him."

Indians can't imagine life without Sachin : Imran Khan

Posted on 05:10 by ranjeet

Legendary Pakistan captain Imran Khan has advised India's batting great Sachin Tendulkar not be at the mercy of the selectors and asked him to quit international cricket on a high.

Calls for 39-year-old Tendulkar's retirement from international cricket got stronger after the batting maestro was bowled thrice in a row during the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.

Imran said if he was in Tendulkar's position he would have left cricket on a high.

"Sachin is such a great player but I can only say if I were in his position, I would want to leave on a high and my greatest worry was that I should never be at the mercy of the selectors," Imran was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Asked if Tendulkar could ever be at the mercy of the selectors, Imran said: "No, but why put yourself in such a position. I mean Sachin, what a brilliant record he has. Would he not want to?

Imran said what worries him is whether Tendulkar can perform to the best of his potential.

"Again I put myself in that position, my greatest worry was that I would not be able to perform best to my abilities. So people will not remember me for when I was at the peak but when I was leaving my career," he said.

"I think Sachin is such a great player and people are emotionally attached. I can understand the Indian public, who has been watching him for 23 years. They can't imagine life without Sachin. But from Sachin's point of view, knowing that the kind of pride that he takes in his cricket. There must be a time when he should decide that this is the right time to leave," Imran added.

khan1Imran said he retired after leading Pakistan to triumph in the 1992 World Cup because he wanted to go out at his peak.

"The reason I retired was because I did not want to be at the mercy of the selectors. I wanted to go out at my peak. The only reason I kept playing was for the cancer hospital. The board of governance told me that if you get out of cricket you won't be able to collect money. That's the only reason for which I kept playing. Having seen those heights, I just did not want to be at the mercy of selectors or people saying it's the time you should leave," he said

Imran said he has immense respect for Sunil Gavaskar because he left cricket when he was on peak.

"That's why I respect Sunil Gavaskar. He left, he could have gone on. Sunil had one of the best defensive techniques I have seen in a batsman. Given that technique, he could have gone on but he left at the peak," he said.

Sachin Tendulkar will respond fittingly to critics: Sourav Ganguly

Posted on 01:31 by ranjeet

The case of the ball zipping through Sachin Tendulkar's bat and pad thrice in the recently-concluded two-Test series against New Zealand has sparked a big debate: Is age catching up with the master batsman?

There was also a suggestion from a former star batsman that he was "naturally slowing down" due to age. A long time opening partner to Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, however, dismissed all such notions. "He will combat this and respond in a fitting way," the southpaw said.

"I have not seen any slowness in him. It's not the first time he has been bowled. It has happened even when he was at his peak. Back then he found a way, he is going to do it again," said the former India captain soon after delivering his speech at the Dilip Sardesai Memorial Lecture to a large and august audience that included former India stars Madhav Mantri, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Bapu Nadkarni and Sanjay Manjrekar at the Bombay Gymkhana on Friday.

Ganguly stressed: "I'm sure he will combat this and come back and play well. This (criticism) has hurt him and he will respond to it. Having played with him for so long, you got to believe he's not over. When he goes, he will go out on a high, like it should be for every player and more so for the great man."

dadaAbout how Tendulkar could be back to his best, Ganguly said, "He has in the past used one-day cricket to stay in focus for Tests. But it's up to him as he knows his game better than others. He's not getting any younger. He can't play all forms of cricket. I feel he should concentrate more on Tests."

Earlier in his speech, Ganguly also dismissed the notion that the T20s were threatening Tests. "Twenty20 has taken off but Tests are here to stay. I believe that all the three formats of the game are here to stay. We are in an era where Test cricket is questioned, there is talk about day/night Tests too. There are bigger challenges therefore, for a modern-day player. But I feel the best like Kevin Pietersen will adjust to all forms," said Ganguly.

Tendulkar's balance is brilliant – VVS Laxman

Posted on 18:25 by ranjeet

The stylish V V S Laxman, India's middle order bulwark who announced his retirement from international cricket recently, reckons that his ability to come good in pressure situations was his "biggest strength" as a batsman.

The 37-year-old Laxman said he loved playing under difficult situations and adversities brought out the best in him.

"I used to love playing under tough situations when the team was under pressure. Adversities brought out the best in me. I guess it came from having to be the main batsman for Hyderabad since a young age", he said.

"I was used to taking up more responsibility when the team was struggling. More than the technique and the skill set, I think the ability to come good in pressure situations was my biggest strength as a batsman" said Laxman, whose sudden decision to quit the game triggered speculation of a strained relationship with his captain M S Dhoni.

Laxman also did not agree with the notion that he was more of an 'artist' than a batsman and said he always considered himself as a batsman who had to get runs for the country.

"I've always considered myself as a batsman who has to get runs for the country. Every individual has a different style. But your role is to get results for the team. My role was to get the runs and take the catches that came my way", Laxman told BCCI's official website.

"It doesn't matter what kind of shots you play to get those runs and whether it is pleasing to the eye. All that is the by-product of what you're trying to achieve for the team.

I thank the Almighty for the talent to please the eyes of those who watch me bat. But my only aim when I went out to bat was to get runs for the team", he explained.

"All of them have inspired me and I was really privileged to share the dressing room with such top sportsmen who took a lot of pride in their performances. All of us had one common goal, which was constant progress of Indian cricket.

"Another thing that brought all these men together was that they were all leaders. All of them have led the country at various stages and I've played under them. Whether or not they were captaining the team, they always led from the front and thought as leaders. Simply by their actions, they inspired everyone who watched them", he said.

Asked to pick special qualities of his teammates, Laxman said "Tendulkar's balance is brilliant. He has the most balanced stance that I've seen. Rahul stood out for the professionalism and his temperament.

"Kumble had a never-say-die attitude and the fighting spirit. Sourav, for the grace and the courage to take the fight to the opposition, to protect his and his team's pride", he said.

Laxman lavished praise on opener Virender Sehwag and said people mostly talk about his "unbelievable" shots but he also had a good temperament.

"It's just unreal. Sehwag is one batsman I really love watching bat. Some of the shots that he plays are unbelievable".

"People mostly talk about Sehwag's skills and the ability to hit the ball. But for me what stands out is his temperament. Irrespective of whether he's in form or not, he sticks to his game plan and believes in himself. Sometimes, I wondered why can't we all play like he does?", he said.

"Honestly, they never sledged me too much. In international cricket the opposition are smart enough to know which batsmen will be affected by sledging and which won?t.

"They realised it soon enough that their ploy of distracting me wasn?t going to work. A lot of people would be surprised to hear this, but for most part of my career, I've not been sledged by the Australians", he said.

Laxman said he idolised Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev while growing up and also drew a lot of inspiration from Mohammed Azharuddin.

"I had many heroes. At that time India?s two biggest match-winners were Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev and I idolised them. When I was 16-17, I first met Mohammad Azharuddin. He was from Hyderabad and the captain of the Indian Cricket Team.

I drew lot of inspiration watching him play from close quarters.

"As a kid I watched a lot of cricket on the television and looked up to players like Sir Vivian Richards, David Gower and Greg Chappell. I really enjoyed watching them play."

On why Hyderabad had produced so many batsmen with such magical wrists, he said playing on matting wickets was one of the reasons.

"I think it's a bit of a coincidence that people like Azharuddin, ML Jaisimha and myself hail from Hyderabad.

Still, if I were to think of any reason, it would be because we played a lot on matting wickets.

"While batting on these wickets, you have to use your wrists more than your elbow to negotiate the bounce of the ball when pitched on good length. That's probably a reason why we?re wristier than batsmen from other parts of the country," he explained.

Asked whether he would have liked to have batted higher up the order in the Indian team, Laxman said his job was to perform whatever role assigned to him by the team management.

laxman_sachin_300"Everyone has a certain role to play. I've always been taught by my parents to honestly perform whatever role has been assigned to you to the best of your ability. I started off as a middle-order batsman, opened the innings for four years and then came back in the middle-order.

"To play for my country in itself was the most satisfying feeling for me. I cannot say that I would've contributed more at No.3", he said.

How difficult was it to adapt at different batting positions?

"It was a big challenge. Batting at No.5 and 6 was very new to me and something I had to adapt to, especially in terms of batting with the tail. I started to bat at that position from 2000-01 and it was difficult in the beginning.

"Initially, when batting with the tail, I tended to throw my wicket away, trying to play big shots. But with time, I learned that it was important to have partnerships with the lower-order batsmen. The key to that was to communicate well with them and form strategies.

Kapil, Azhar back Sachin, say he should decide when to quit

Posted on 18:20 by ranjeet

Former Indian captains Kapil Dev and Mohammed Azharuddin on Friday backed Sachin Tendulkar, who is under pressure to call time on his illustrious career, saying that he should decide when he wants to retire.

After his failure in the recent New Zealand Test series in which he was bowled three times in a row, there has been a debate whether Tendulkar should retire now.

However, Tendulkar does not have retirement in mind as he has said he would retire only when he stops enjoying playing the game.

"Honestly, I wanted him to retire after the World Cup win. But the need of the hour is that I will stand by him. I want to back him and want him to go with a big smile," Kapil, the first World Cup winning Indian captain, said.

"It is tough to leave a game you love. It was tough for me as well. And he has got so much in the last 23 years. So. it's wrong for us to discuss (retirement)," Kapil said.

Azharuddin, one of the most successful Indian captains, suggested Tendulkar to play more matches to rediscover his form.

"I have found that he has become a little slow. Reflexes go slow with age and pressure. It's been 23 years now and it takes a toll. Everyone is talking about Virat Kohli. He is doing well because he has played so many matches. Sachin played the two Test matches (against New Zealand) after three months. I think he needs to play more.

kapildev"Now that he wants to continue playing, he should play more matches. And when he goes, he should go with a smile, everyone should know it before and then celebrate that game," Azhar said at 'India Today Youth Summit' here.

However, Kapil took a jibe at Tendulkar for not expressing himself clearly as he hardly gives opinions.

"I have not seen a better sportsperson that India has produced. But in his 23 years as a player, I still don't know him. That's the problem. We must know his opinion," he said.

Both Kapil and Azhar also asked youngsters to excel in Test cricket and not get distracted by Twenty20 format.

"No cricket is bigger than Test cricket. T20 is exciting for youngsters. There is fun on that track but there is danger too. It's good to see sixes and boundaries but real cricket is Test cricket," Kapil said.

Echoing the same sentiment, Azhar said," Test cricket is the real test of a cricketer. I think, the ICC and all the cricket Boards should make efforts to ensure that Test cricket stays no matter how many formats come."

India's young cricketer Unmukt Chand, who shared the dais with the two former captains, said he was keen to play all three formats.

"IPL has helped me lot. Sharing the dressing room with players such as Virender Sehwag and Mahela has helped. I want to do well in all formats," Chand, who led India to Under-19 World Cup win in Australia, said.

Azhar and Kapil also took questions from the audience.

Responding to one such query, Kapil said the expectations from fans put them under lot of pressure while playing against Pakistan.

He also said that they did not do anything different to win the World Cup final against the mighty West Indies team in 1983 but many stories are spun after the success.

Sachin Tendulkar is still the best cricketer in the world : Ganguly

Posted on 07:10 by ranjeet

Sourav Ganguly has backed Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha as Indian spinners for the future but urged the think-tank to include Harbhajan Singh as the third tweaker in the side.

Ganguly, talking during the Dilip Sardesai memorial lecture, said, "When I see Ashwin and Ojha, although they have a long way to go, I feel we have quality spinners but if India has to pick 3 spinners Bhajji should come in."

Dada was also forthcoming in comparing the Indian Premier League and playing for the country.

He said, "Have to answer team owner after IPL but never had to do that when I captained Indian team."

The former India skipper also said that First class cricket has come up leaps and bounds in India from his times and is a lot more organised now.

Ganguly remembered the days at the MRF academy he spent along with Sachin Tendulkar.

He fondly recalled Dennis Lillee's tip to the duo, "Sachin was with me in MRF academy and Denis Lillee saw both of us. He said that batting is a better option for us."

When questioned about the role of a coach in team sport, Sourav said, "Whoever is the coach his job is to help the captain to make a better team."

dadaIncidentally, even Ganguly had put forth his intentions to coach Team India in the future, if and when required.

On being asked about the retirement of his former opening partner, Sachin Tendulkar, he said, "Its up to Sachin. He is 39 and has the liberty to pick and choose but I firmly feel he should concentrate more on Test cricket. Why I still feel Sachin should play, is that it (slump in form) has happened before too. I am sure a player as big as him will respond and whenever he will go will go on a high."

He also reiterated the fact that Tendulkar is still the best cricketer in his eyes.

When asked about his antics during the 2002 England tour, Ganguly could not point out the reason for the Lord's 'shirt removing and exulting' episode.

On being asked if he happens to coach Indian team, what mantra's will he take from Greg Chappell, he went on to praise the Aussie great for his knowledge on batting.

Ganguly said, "His knowledge as a batsman was terrific, loads of things which I won't follow."

Sachin is truly a phenomenon, he is the God of Cricket – Harbhajan Singh

Posted on 06:22 by ranjeet

Veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Friday backed senior teammate Sachin Tendulkar, insisting that he remains a phenomenon despite being off-colour in the just-concluded Test series against New Zealand.

"I don't want to comment on what others have said. But Sachin is somebody we all have looked up to while playing. He is the best cricketer I have played with," Harbhajan said here.

"He scores 100s but never gets tired. His hunger for runs is amazing. He is truly a phenomenon, a legend and the God of cricket. Yet he keeps himself so simple. You learn a lot from him," he added.

The 39-year-old Tendulkar was bowled thrice in four innings in the just-concluded India-New Zealand Test series, prompting many to announce that age is catching up with him.

Learn from Saina Nehwal,Tendulkar's tips to young sportspersons

Posted on 07:43 by ranjeet

Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday advised budding sportspersons to put in hours of practice in order to achieve success at the international level just like Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal.Speaking at an interactive session here, Sachin cited Nehwal's example and said that the shuttler has attained great heights in her chosen field through sheer hardwork and sustained practice.

"Young sportspersons should learn from the Olympic bronze medallist (Nehwal) and remain focused on their game to achieve success," Tendulkar said. The legendary cricketer last month felicitated the ace shuttler for her Olympic feat and gifted her a new BMW car.

The session, moderated by cricket journalist Sunandan Lele, was organised by realty firm Amit Enterprises, at a city hotel. Tendulkar is brand ambassador of that firm.

amitTendulkar looked in a relaxed mood and answered a wide range of questions from the audience.Asked about the retirement of senior cricketers Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman, he said both had their own unique styles and they were great players.

To another question, the batting maestro said his dream of winning the World Cup had been fulfilled and advised youngsters to chase their dreams. He told the gathering about his childhood in Mumbai's Sahitya Sahavas, a colony of well-known writers, school life and his practice sessions at Shivaji Park.

"Besides cricket, I also liked tennis. But on advice of my elder brother, I took up cricket."Tendulkar said he was coming to Nashik, about 200 km from Mumbai, after a gap of nearly three decades.

"I visited Trimbakeshwar (a holy town on Nashik's outskirts) for the first time with my parents when I was just 7 or 8 years old. I was here again in 1983-84 for a cricket tournament."

Sachin Tendulkar will answer with his bat : MS Dhoni

Posted on 18:22 by ranjeet

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday ticked all the positive boxes while asserting that he was quite happy with the overall performances of the team that is unlikely to see any kind of "reshuffling" for the forthcoming home Test series against England and Australia.

Speaking to media after leading India to a 2-0 series sweep against New Zealand here Monday, Dhoni said he was not unduly worried about the poor form of some of his batsmen, notably opener Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, while making a case for a longer run to the younger players rather than judging them on the basis of a couple of innings.

"No reshuffling. I think, it is just a matter of time before he gets going. I thought he batted quite well in the second innings," said Dhoni with reference to Gambhir who had scores of 22, 2 and 34 in three innings in the two Tests against the Kiwis.

With regard to Tendulkar, the captain said: "Everytime we talk about Tendulkar's form, he comes up with a big innings and I am waiting."

Dhoni was dismissive of criticism of Suresh Raina's injudicious shot that cost him his wicket in the second innings here and emphasized that younger players needed to be given a long run.

masd"Like I said, there are two ways of dealing with pressure. Either you go for your shots, like Raina did, or soak in the pressure, like Virat (Kohli) who batted brilliantly. It depends on the individuals, but I feel we need to back the youngsters, for that's the way to groom them," said Dhoni.

The Indian captain again made a strong case for playing home Tests on pitches that assist spin, but in the same breath, Dhoni praised spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha for their effort on tracks that did not assist them, but favoured the batsmen.

"I would like to see us batting on turning tracks, but our spinners were brilliant (in the just-concluded series) on pitches that didn't help them, but I feel that the fast bowlers need to chip in.

"Ashwin and Ojha complemented each other and hunted well on pitches that were good to bat on. Ashwin has been bowling brilliantly and is learning variation while Ojha bowled well in the first innings here," said Dhoni.

Sourav Ganguly Blasts Critics on Sachin’s Retirement Talks

Posted on 18:04 by ranjeet

It’s a question on everyone’s mind, but Sachin Tendulkar’s. Following VVS Laxman’s retirement last month, the ‘famous quartet’ has been reduced to just one with Tendulkar remaining as the last man standing. But how long will the maestro go on?  Tendulkar has scored a mere 63 runs. But it’s not how little he has managed but the manner in which he has been dismissed, that has caused the angst.

Gauti averages 25 much below than sachin if you feel about form no player performed in Australia. if drop sachin drop others too.sachin's average in his poor form is even better than many of his teammates. so stop blaming him alone.you critics won't understand what sachin has achieved unless you play cricket.you want sachin 2 retire just because he s 39 ? will u ask amitabh bachhan 2 stop acting just because he s old ? its totally wrong.

If sachin scores a 100 vs Eng in 1st test i want to face the same expert panel who wants him to retire. See the full video interview below.Fact 15- Sachin Tendulkar with Sourav Ganguly in 2000

Sachin Tendulkar will know best when to go, says Glen McGrath

Posted on 17:57 by ranjeet

Glenn McGrath made his final appearance in India as a player in 2009 when he played for Delhi Daredevils in the Champions League clash against the Royal Challengers at Bangalore.

The Australian fast bowling ace returned to the country in a new role - that of a coach - as he succeeded the legendary Dennis Lillee as Director of Coaching at the MRF Pace Foundation.

In a chat with the TOI, McGrath spoke on his great adversary Sachin Tendulkar, with whom he has engaged in legendary duels and who he dismissed six times in nine Tests and seven times in 23 ODIs, the Indian pace attack and what is it that one needs to become a complete fast bowler just like McGrath himself. Excerpts.

You had some great duels with Tendulkar. Looking at him now and how he's been dismissed against New Zealand, do you think bowlers will fancy their chances against him?

Look, to me Sachin Tendulkar is still a wonderful batsman. I saw him bat today for a while and he was middling it pretty well. As a batsman, he has seen it all and if he feels, there are areas to work on, he will do that. And I know you'll ask whether Sachin should retire, and my answer would be 'Leave it to Sachin. He will know when to go'.

mcgrathSachin is around, but VVS is gone. Do you think the Indian batting line-up will no longer be the same again?

VVS was really an astonishing player. I have been on the wrong end of some Lara classics, but that innings of 281 he (VVS) played at the Eden Gardens (2001) is one of the best innings I have seen on-field...When such great players go, you are bound to feel a void, but Virat Kohli is coming up very well.

You still hold the record of being the highest wicket-taker in Tests (563). What goes into the making of a quality pacer?

It's about being physically and mentally strong for long periods of time. You have to work as hard as you can, but then, it's important to know your body as well. It's also a matter of self-belief and being patient. All these attributes have to come together if you have to succeed consistently at the top level.

What is your take on the Indian pacers?

It's extremely important to have a good pace attack for a team has to be successful. I haven't seen too many of them, but my favourite is still Zaheer Khan. He swings the ball around and is still a wily customer. I was quite impressed by (Umesh) Yadav, he works up a good pace and has a good attitude. There are a few others in the business, but I have to see them more to make an honest assessment.
