Champion' Yuvraj has set an example, says Sachin Tendulkar

Posted on 05:58 by ranjeet

As Yuvraj Singh prepares to start his second innings in international cricket after his successful battle with cancer, Sachin Tendulkar says the "champion" has set a great example for not just fellow sportspersons but all those suffering from the disease.

"He's undergone those tough treatments and those tough sessions and he's back in the Indian cricket team. So he's set a great example not only for the sportsman to follow but for a common man suffering from cancer. I think he's set a great example," Tendulkar said.

Calling him a champion, Tendulkar remembered Yuraj's heroics in the 2011 World Cup.

"To me he's a champion -- once a champion will always be a champion. I was really happy that he got the Man of the Series, Man of the tournament in the World Cup and then yes, he had health problems", Tendulkar said.

"And then again, as I said he's a champion and he proved it and he's addressed those issues with the help of the doctors and every possible thing which a cancer patient should do he's done," he said.

The veteran batsman was impressed with the India colts' triumph in the Under-19 World Cup recently, and picked captain Unmukt Chand for special praise.

"Yeah, I mean to be honest, I haven't seen much of him (Unmukt). But whatever I have seen I've really liked. I got to spend some time with the U-19 team before they left for the World Cup. It was a fantastic experience to share my thoughts with the team and also to watch them play fabulous cricket.

"They really played well. They played well as a team. In fact, when the Hyderabad Test was on while getting ready in my room I used to switch on the television to watch the game and that would continue till we reached the dressing room. We saw the finals but brilliant, they really batted well", he said.

Sachin_B_June_11_2012"And with the help of some brilliant performances, individual performances, Unmukt has really done well in the finals. It was fantastic moment to watch them celebrate that victory once they got the trophy. The celebration was superb," Tendulkar said.

Talking about his best knock in 2011, a year which saw India winning the World Cup that was followed by the team's disastrous tour to England," Tendulkar chose the one he scored against South Africa in Cape Town at the start of the year.

"My best knock in 2011, I would say I scored a 100 in Cape Town in the 3rd Test in South Africa. I think I scored a 140 plus so that's got to be the most challenging knock of 2011.

"The wicket had bounce and movement and when I look back I feel that one session I played with Gautam on the 3rd morning (and) for 55 or 57 minutes we didn't rotate the strike. I mean that was the quality and standard of bowling, It was really high and one of the enjoyable sessions that I find most challenging session that I have been part of."

On the Indian team's performance in the year gone by, he said it was a "special year".

"2011 was a really special year, especially the first half. The first half we won the World Cup which was the ultimate thing. I waited for 22 long years to lift the trophy.

"That evening was really special, you can only dream of such things and when they turn into reality, you're speechless."

He also spoke about the outings in England and Australia. "England tour wasn't that great for the team. There were individual good performances but when you look at the team it wasn't a great tour for us though immediately when England came to India we showed them the other side of the coin.

"There were moments where we felt that sort of in the driving seat (in the Melbourne Test), but they slipped away from us. We were not able to grab them."

On records and the 100th hundred, Tendulkar said, "Well, I know that this will only happen once in my entire life. I can't get another award for that. Records are meant to be broken. I'm happy that it has happened."

Exclusive Pics : Sachin Tendulkar at nets a Day Before The 2nd Test VS NZ in Bangalore

Posted on 05:53 by ranjeet
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has cautioned his teammates from taking New Zealand lightly and said the visiting team's pacers would look to exploit the overcast conditions during the second Test match, starting here on Friday.

"New Zealand is a good bowling side and will come up with good bowling plan by exploiting the overcast conditions at Chinnaswamy stadium. The first spell will be really crucial for both sides," Dhoni told reporters here.

"Indian batsmen have to negotiate their pace and they have to get as many wickets as possible," he added.

Kiwi pacers had managed to pick up wickets even on the Hyderabad track, which did not assist the fast bowlers much. Dhoni informed that he has requested the groundsmen here to make a turning track, but said that the batsmen will have to play on whatever pitch is given to them.

"The subcontinental speciality should be spin and I think we should stick to it," he said.

Sachin Tendulkar rules out retirement for now

Posted on 17:46 by ranjeet

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday indicated that he would not retire for now.

"As long as there is a reason to wake up with a reason in the morning, it makes sense in continuing (playing cricket). The day I don't enjoy wielding bat in my hands, I will think otherwise. But that moment hasn't come as yet. When I will get that feeling, I will confirm on that," he said after receiving the Test Cricketer of 2011 at an awards function.

His younger contemporaries like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have hung up their boots from international cricket.

Receiving Special Award for notching up a double ton in an ODI match against the West Indies, Virender Sehwag said his next target was to play 100 Tests for the country.

In a lighter vein, Sehwag said superstition did not apply to him when he approached double ton in any form of cricket as he did not give any room for the bowlers to think much.

"If the ball is there to hit along the fence or over it, I do that without much thinking," he said.

However, Sehwag said he was a bit superstitious when Tendulkar neared his first double ton in one-day internationals.

Omgsachin2"We all thought even if Sachin gets out on 190s, we will all stand up and clap anyhow. But when he got there, all players and sports staff gathered at the players balcony and applauded his achievement. That feeling cannot be expressed," he said.

Receiving Performance Under Pressure Award, Gautam Gambhir said last two T20 World Cups were disappointing for Team India after winning the first. However, the team would try to give 100 per cent and play well in the competition.

"I am not sure of winning the cup. It is not in our hands, but will put up a good show in the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in Sri Lanka," he said.

On lifetime achievement awardee Ajit Wadekar, Tendulkar said the former Indian captain was a fantastic coach who knew the art of mentally preparing before he walked out on the field.

Session With Sachin Tendulkar Helped us Win World Cup – Unmukt Chand

Posted on 05:36 by ranjeet

India’s Under-19 cricket captain, Unmukt Chand on Tuesday revealed that the session with batting prodigy, Sachin Tendulkar before leaving for Australia helped his side win the World Cup.

“We had a half-an-hour session with him before leaving. The session was helpful,” Chand told media persons on the sidelines of a function organised by the BCCI to felicitate the Under-19 squad.

“He told what we would face there and how we need to tackle it. He helped us a lot and told us the dos and don’ts,” he added further.

India defeated hosts and defending champions Australia by six wickets in the final to clinch the U-19 Cricket World Cup title for the third time.

Chand, who led India’s win in the summit clash with a scintillating unbeaten ton, thereby becoming India’s highest run scorer in the marquee tournament, said his players always had immense self-belief that they would lift the coveted trophy, despite their initial setbacks.

addddddddddddddddd“The belief was very strong among the guys and we always felt we will go and lift the trophy. The self-belief only helped us to win the tournament.”

“The best thing about the tournament is we faltered initially and then we got into the groove slightly later in the tournament. We stumbled a bit, but peaked at the right time,” said the rookie batsman, who is all set to fly to New Zealand along with India A team, early next month.

I don't think anyone can play Straight Drive better than Sachin : Viru

Posted on 17:38 by ranjeet

He is perceived to be a fearless batsman but the flamboyant Virender Sehwag says he feels "nervous" and has butterflies in his tummy whenever he faces the first ball but never shows it to the bowler.

"Every time when I go to the crease and prepare to face the first ball, I'm nervous and there are butterflies in my tummy. I never show it because if the bowler senses it, he'll come hard at me and try to put me under pressure," Sehwag said.

"I have to send across a message to the bowler - I'm here to face you with a lot of aggression and confidence, whether I play a defensive shot or an attacking one," he said.

Sehwag reckoned that it was his mental strength which has helped him to dominate the bowlers in international cricket. "I think it's the mental strength. I have the self confidence and the belief that I can play well against any team and score against any bowling attack," he told BCCI's official website Tuesday.

"International cricket is all about mental toughness. If you're strong in your mind and can control your mind, you can perform against anybody. That's my biggest strength," he said.

The 33-year-old Sehwag said that of late he has changed his approach to batting slightly and was willing to hang in for some time before playing his strokes. "Now I'm a little more careful about how the wicket is behaving, whether the ball is swinging or not and how the bowling attack is. I give a little more time to myself to understand the conditions and situation well and then plan my innings accordingly.

"Having said that, if somebody bowls a half-volley on a green top, I'll still go after it and I'll still play my square cuts if the ball is pitched short outside the off-stump.

"But if a bowler is bowling in good areas, I have to give respect to the new ball rather than the bowler. If I do that and play 10-12 overs with caution, the ball gets old by the time and the bowlers start to get a bit tired. Then, I can take them on," Sehwag said.

Asked what was the difference between opening the batting with Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir, he said he was under less pressure when Tendulkar was his partner.

428813_352531868150941_2080189612_n"When I'm batting with Tendulkar, there's very less pressure on me because the opponents are all concentrating on getting him out. With Gautam, the bowlers are worried about getting me out rather than him. Hence I have to be careful.

"Also, Gautam and I are very good friends, and the communication between us is very good."

Sehwag said it was important to be happy and give your best and not worry too much about the results.

"The important thing is to be happy, whether you score a zero or a 300. You just go out there and give your best; sometimes you click, sometimes you don't. One should always be happy, irrespective of what you achieve in a match or in life," he explained.

Asked whether there was a better hitter of the cricket ball than him, he said, "There are a lot of players who're better [hitters] than me. In my team, there's Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh - they hit the ball harder than I do.

"In other teams, there's David Warner, Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen. In every team there are a couple of such batsmen who can hit long sixes," he said.

Does he mull over his shot and watch replays when he gets out to a rash shot ? "Most of the times [when] I throw my wicket away, be it a limited-overs game or a Test match, I go over the top trying to hit a four or a six, mistime it and get out. That's my game. As long as my team and the coach are happy with how I play, I don't have any problems with getting out like that," he said.

On what's the one thing that he would want to take from Tendulkar's batting, he said, "The straight drive. I don't think anyone can play that shot better than he does."

I worship Sachin Tendulkar: Virat Kohli

Posted on 03:49 by ranjeet

Sachin Tendulkar sees a shadow of himself in Virat Kohli but the young Indian batsman says he literally worships the iconic cricketer and matching his feats would be nothing short of "mission impossible" for him.

Kohli is the fastest to score 1000 and then 3000 ODI runs and has been India's most prolific scorer this year with five centuries which led to many comparing him with Tendulkar.

Tendulkar himself considers Kohli a worthy challenger to his incredible record of 100 international centuries. However, Kohli said there is no comparison between him and his idol.

"I feel really blessed when people start comparing me with Sachin, but I keep myself focused on my performance, and not on such comparisons. I literally worship him, so, I don't see too much in this comparison," Kohli said.

"No cricketer has been able to score one hundred centuries like Sachin. It will be a big achievement. I don't think at all about this, because it increases pressure on you. I keep myself focused on my performance," he said during a TV show.

About his selection as vice-captain, Kohli said, it was a pleasant surprise for him and refuted suggestions that he would be eventually replacing Mahendra Singh Dhoni as skipper. "No, I don't think so. As captain, he has done a lot for Team India. I learnt a lot as a vice-captain," he said.

The Delhi batsman disagreed with Sourav Ganguly, who felt that the selectors had taken an emotional decision by rushing Yuvraj Singh into international cricket after illness.

Yuvraj, who has recovered from a rare germ cell cancer, has been included in Indian squad for the World Twenty20 beginning next month in Sri Lanka.

"I don't think it is an emotional decision. If he says he is confident and fit, then he should be given the chance. It should be a perfect comeback for him," Kohli said.

"The first match after comeback always makes one nervous. If he performs well in the World Cup, it will be a big boost for Team India. For us, the World Cup is an important tournament," he added.

Talking about his aggressive attitude on the field, Kohli said it is part of his nature.

"I had this habit from childhood. I never liked being out, whether I am out on zero or I score a ton. I get angry. Occasionally, I shout abuses, but, of late, I am trying to control my aggression, so that my behaviour doesn't go over the top. I have broken too many bats in my childhood," he said.

Kohli was also candid enough to admit that he got distracted after playing in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"Yes, there was a bit of distraction. We had just come from the Under-19 World Cup win. We were playing with foreign (star) players, I did not handle it (attention) well.

"I was even thrown out of the team but my coach advised me concentrate on the game and I got my focus back."

Exclusive Pics : Sachin Tendulkar Celebrating India's 1st Test Victory VS NZ | Hyderabad

Posted on 08:44 by ranjeet

Having raised visions of a stirring fightback, New Zealand imploded for the second time in as many days to slump to an embarrassing innings and 115-run humbling in the first Test against India.

Through Brendon McCullum, playing out of character with emphasis on occupation of the crease rather than flamboyant stroke-making, and Kane Williamson, the impressive right-hand bat who once again showed great gumption and application

From there on, the procession continued unabated. Ashwin spun a magical web of deceit around the lower order with offbreaks, the doosra and the carrom ball all thrown in. Like in the first innings, Chris Martin was his sixth and final victim to signal victory and send upwards of 20,000 fans into delirium. 1-0 up now, with the second Test beginning in Bangalore on August 31.

After asking New Zealand to follow on, India picked up the wicket of Martin Guptill before rain forced the third day's play to be abandoned just before 3pm. New Zealand were on 41 for one, still 238 runs behind India's first-innings score of 438. New Zealand began their second innings extremely cautiously, with Brendon McCullum being the picture of restraint against spin and pace.

New Zealand’s worst fears came true at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. It was only a day two surface and there was neither diabolical turn nor dramatic bounce, but at the first hint of turn, New Zealand’s fragile top order came unstuck to firmly propel India into the driver’s seat in the first Test.            India might have been disappointed at not adding a few more to their final tally, but Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha would have taken heart from four wickets for Jeetan Patel, the offspinner. Admittedly, figures of 4 for 100 did slightly flatter Patel, but it was obvious that there was some purchase for him even this early in the Test match.

Posted on 05:18 by ranjeet
Sehwag's dismissal typically robbed India of momentum. Sachin Tendulkar, extremely cautious, was content to hold his end up, though Pujara occasionally livened up proceedings with excellent cuts both against the pacers and Jeetan Patel, whose offspin was at best steady.

The innings reached a flashpoint with Tendulkar's dismissal, by Boult. The left-arm paceman brought one back into Tendulkar and breached his defences to hit off and middle. Tendulkar squatted after the ball had passed him, suggesting that it had stayed down, though in reality, the vagaries of the pitch had very little to do with his downfall.

New Zealand were suddenly pumped up, aware that all the experienced Indian batsmen were back in the hut and the soft underbelly that the middle-order might be lay exposed. Their designs were comprehensively repelled by Pujara, batting with supreme authority, and Kohli, clearly buoyed by his recent limited-overs form but competent enough to adapt to the demands of the longer version.
